Elle Penner, MPH, RD

It is okay to drink protein shakes everyday, however it’s important to remember that they are a dietary supplement and should not be used to replace food. While they are a convenient and cost-effective way to up your protein intake, drinking too many can lead to nutrient gaps or deficiencies that can negatively impact your health.

Protein needs vary from person to person; however, research shows intakes of 1-2 g/kg/day are safe for healthy adults and adequate to meet the needs of most active individuals [

]. Consuming too much protein can increase your risk of weight gain, kidney damage, and heart disease. Because of this, it’s best to get most of your protein from food sources and supplement with 1-2 protein shakes per day, if needed.

When choosing protein foods, be sure to prioritize healthy sources including fish and seafood, poultry, beans, tofu, legumes, nuts and whole grains, which provide other essential nutrients as well. You can also choose protein supplements, like Elo Smart Recovery, to meet your needs.
