It can be challenging to maintain adequate nutrition when you have no appetite. However, this task isn’t impossible, and can even be delicious despite a decreased desire for food!
Here is a list of what to eat when you have no appetite.
- Broths and soups: Warm broths or clear soups are gentle on the stomach and can provide important nutrients. Try adding vegetables, lean protein (such as chicken or tofu), and herbs for flavor.
- Smoothies: Blend fruits, leafy greens or yogurt with protein powder to make an easy-to-drink smoothie. If desired, add a nut butter or avocado to increase the calorie count.
- Crackers or toast: Plain crackers or toast can be a good option to nibble on throughout the day. If you feel up to it, pair them with some peanut butter or cheese for added protein.
- Oatmeal: Warm oatmeal can be comforting and easy to eat. Add fruits, nuts, or honey for added flavor and nutrition.
- Yogurt: This is easy to eat and highly palatable, especially when paired with granola, fruit or a drizzle of honey.
- Small, frequent meals: Instead of trying to eat three meals per day, focus on eating little amounts all day long that also pack a nutrition punch (like nuts, seeds, dried fruits, and nut butter). This could help stimulate your appetite and prevent you from feeling too full.
- Hydration: Even if you don't feel like eating, be sure to stay hydrated. Drink water, herbal teas, or electrolyte-rich beverages (like Smart Protein) to maintain your fluid balance.
